Seat on the Korner: Adam Wainwright

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

This was Adam Wainwright’s 465th career appearance, tying him with Bill Sherdel (1918-32, ‘32) for 3rd all-time in Cardinals history. With today's win he is now 2 away from 200 Career wins, Wainwright pitched into the sixth scattering 7 hits and giving up 3 runs all via the long ball. Wainwright used his veteran savvy as well as his signature curve ball to induce several ground balls when he needed them most. Wainwright moves to 198-118 lifetime.

Need to Know

  • Adam Wainwright made his first appearance against the Mets since Sept. 2021 when he posted a 7-0 win at Citi Field in the midst of the Cardinals record 17-game winning streak ... St. Louis has won each of Waino’s last six starts at Citi Field with Adam going 5-0 .

  • Luis Guillorme, who got the start in place of Francisco Lindor,(who was with his wife as they had their second child, but arrived at the ballpark during the game) continues to rake against the Cardinals. is 9-20(.450) with three runs, three doubles, one home run, and three RBI in seven career games against St. Louis.

  • Starling Marte stretched his hitting streak to 8, batting .367 (11-30) with six runs, two RBI and two steals during that stretch..He has now safely reached base in 15 of his last 17 games.

  • The Cardinals overcame two Mets trends as New York is now 19-2 when their starter goes at least 6.0 innings and are now 20-8 when scoring first this season.

  • Bretty Baty is batting .285 (22-77) with 11 runs, six doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI,in 23 games at home this year.

Turning Point

The Mets jumped out to an early lead on Brandon Nimmo's second lead off home run of the home stand, the Cardinals answered back with 3 runs in the top of the second and opened up a 3 run lead on rookie Jordan Walker's 5th homerun of the season. Luis Guillorme made it a one run game with a 5th inning 2 run homw run, The Mets could not get a key hit, Jeff McNeil came up with runners on 1st and 3rd in the bottom of the seventh but grounded out to strand the tying run ninety feet away.

Three Keys

Kodia Senga continues to pitch out of trouble , he got out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning. He needs to cut down on these early game situations as they contribute to his high pitch count, Overall Senga has been one of the most consistent of the Mets starters, but if the Mets are to turn this season around he needs to grow as a Major League pitcher.

Jordan Hicks put an exclamation point on the work of the Cardinals bullpen striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth. The trio of Andre Pallante, Giovanny Gallegos and Hicks pitched 2 and 2/3 of scoreless relief striking out 5.

Jordan Walker's 5th inning Home run ended up being the difference in the 5-3 Cardinal win. The win ended the Cardinals 6 game losing streak and St. Louis will have a chance to win their first series in exactly one month tomorrow.
