Seat on the Korner: Charlie Morton

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

We crown the star of the game and extend a virtual invitation to the esteemed Seat on the Korner, tonight to the 40 years and 180 days old, Charlie Morton who now has delivered an impressive streak of four consecutive quality starts. Over 26 innings pitched, he's allowed just 5 earned runs, boasting a remarkable 1.73 ERA during this span, coupled with 22 strikeouts and merely 6 walks. This outing marks his 166th quality start, positioning him as the sixth-most among active pitchers, trailing only his teammate Chris Sale, who holds the fifth spot with 173. Morton's performance for the night was nothing short of stellar: 7 innings pitched, yielding just 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out seven batters, further solidifying his unblemished 3-0 record for the season.

Turning Point

The turning point was quite obviously the top of the 3rd inning as it proved to be a harrowing ordeal for Mets' starter Jose Quintana, known for his ability to keep the long ball at bay. It quickly unraveled into a pivotal moment in tonight's matchup against the Braves. Travis d'Arnaud ignited the onslaught with a sharp single to right field off Quintana's delivery. Despite Orlando Arcia grounding into a double play, hope was short-lived as Ronald Acuña Jr. promptly sent a soaring 461 foot shot to center field, marking the beginning of Quintana's nightmare. The nightmare didn't end there, as Ozzie Albies followed suit with a blast to left field, leaving Quintana rattled. A walk to Austin Riley brought a brief respite in the form of a mound visit, but it only delayed the inevitable. Matt Olson seized the opportunity, driving a line drive over the right-center field fence, widening the gap to a daunting four-run deficit. Marcell Ozuna's subsequent strikeout offered a glimmer of relief, but the damage had been done, casting a shadow over the Mets' hopes for the night. It was the first time Quintana gave up three home runs in one inning in his career.

Three Keys

Polar Bear Out of Hibernation

After enduring a slump where he batted just .034 (1-29) in his previous nine games, Pete Alonso is displaying promising signs of breaking out. Following his impressive performance of 2-5 with a home run and a two-run double on May 7th at St. Louis, Pete continued his resurgence with a 2-4 hit and an RBI in the recent game.

May(be) Lindor Heating up

After going 1-31 in his first eight games, Francisco Lindor has scored 21 runs, seven doubles, seven home runs, 20 RBI, nine walks and four steals in 29 games since April 7. He is batting .269 in the month of May.

Pen and Stellar

The Mets Bullpen continues to excel. Tonight Yohan Ramierz in his return pitched 2 scoreless innings as did Adrian Houser in his first appearance out of the pen for the Mets. Houser was helped out by an outstandning defensive play by Brett Baty on a foul ball. The Mets bullpen owns a 2.80 ERA (44 ER/141.1 IP) with 68 walks and 181 strikeouts...Their 2.80 ERA is the best in the Senior Circuit and fifth in the majors...Their 181 strikeouts from the bullpen are the most in the major leagues. The Pen kept the Mets in the game long enough to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but J.D. Martinez game tying home run bid was foul by a few feet and he flied out to end the game.
