Butto, Bullpen Provide Solid Support As Mets Win Fifth Straight

Mets 7, Rockies 3 (Citi Field, Flushing, NY)

Mets Record: 49-45

Mets Streak: W5

Mets Last 10: 7-3

WP: Jose Butto (4-3)

LP: Ryan Feltner (1-9)

SV: Dedniel Nunez (1)

Seat On The Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Jose Butto is an unconventional pick for the Seat on the Korner but his work may have been the difference in this ball game. After Christian Scott ran into trouble in the fifth, manager Carlos Mendoza went to Butto to work out of the jam. Butto not only got the key inning-ending double play, but he gave the Mets two more scoreless innings of relief to earn his fourth win of the season.

Need To Know:

  • Charlie Blackmon homered for the second straight day, launching a two-run bomb off Scott in the fifth inning, giving him 12 career homers against the Mets.

  • Feltner is now 0-2 with an 8.03 ERA in three career starts against the Mets.

  • The Mets are now four games over .500 for the first time since April 20th, tying their high-water mark of the season.

  • Dedniel Nunez worked the final two innings to pick up his first save of the season, becoming the ninth different Met to record a save this year.

  • Brandon Nimmo extended his hitting streak to eight games with an eighth-inning single off of Rockies' reliever Jalen Beeks.

Turning Point

The turning point of this game came early as the Mets had the bases loaded with one out for Luis Torrens, who hit a tailor-made double play ball to second base. Brendan Rodgers threw the ball into center field, however, allowing two runs to score and give the Mets their first lead of the day. The Mets ended up scoring four runs in the second inning but should have been held to none, making this miscue from Colorado today's turning point.

Three Keys

The Bullpen Delivers

On a day when starter Christian Scott couldn't get the Mets through five innings, the team's much-beleaguered bullpen stepped up in a big way. Butto and Nunez combined for 4.2 shutout innings of relief, allowing just two base runners (a hit and a walk allowed by Butto in the eighth) while striking out eight.

Icing On The Cake

The Mets have gotten big weeks from their two All Star snubs. While Nimmo has been red hot all week long, the big blow in this one came from Francisco Lindor, who launched a three-run homer off Beeks in the eighth inning to give them some much needed breathing room. Lindor's 17th home run of the season put the icing on the cake for this game.

Seventh Heaven

Seven has been the magic number for the Mets offense, which has scored exactly seven runs in four of their past five games, all wins. The soft portion of the schedule has provided a nice opportunity for the Mets' lineup to wake back up after a dip last week, setting themselves up nicely to end the first half remarkably strong if they can complete a sweep of the home stand tomorrow afternoon.
