Seat on the Korner: Chris Bassitt

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

One night after defeating former Met Taijuan Walker, the Mets did not fare as well against his former teammate Chris Bassitt. Bassitt who started the game as his wife was due to give birth to their second child was dominant. Bassitt pitched with a purpose, he used his cutter more in this game more than any other game this season. He had the Mets batters off stride all night long. He was at his best in the third when he got out of a first and third no one out jam while clinging to a 1-0 lead, he retired Nimmo, Lindor and McNeil and went on to retire another 11 straight batters. His final line 7 2/3 no runs, 3 hits no walks and eight strike outs for his 6th win of the season.

Need to Know

  • Justin Verlander rebounded after his last start when he allowed a season-high-tying six run over 5.0 innings on nine hits, one walk and two strikeouts May 27 at Colorado...After giving up a leadoff home run to George Springer he settled down to shutdown the Jays while scattering 5 hits, 3 walks striking out 8 over 6 innings. He threw a Met season high 117 pitches, the most of any pitcher since Buck Showalter became manager.

  • The new schedule format has New York playing a total of 43 Interleague games in 2023, more than double their previous high for a single season (20)...The Mets are now 8-5 against the American League this year...Overall, New York owns a 243-232 record in Interleague play...The second-best among National League clubs.

  • The loss ended the Mets' string of eight straight at Citi Field, which was the longest streak since winning nine consecutive from May 18-June 14 last year.

  • George Springer continued his hot hitting and Is now 32-for-104 (.307) over his last 27G (4-2B, 1-3B, 5HR, 13 RBI) his lead off home run the 54th of his career ties him with Alfonso Soriano for second all time. While playing for Houston, Springer established the Astros’ single-season mark by going off for 12 leadoff blasts in ’19. Since joining the Blue Jays, he's added 16 more, Springer also holds Toronto's single-season record, hitting nine in 2022.

  • George Springer and Daulton Varsho's home runs were the 659th home run all-time in Interleague Play, which is the most among all 30 teams (2nd: NYY - 625).

  • The Blue Jays continued their run of scoring in every game this season they now have gone 76 straight games without being shut out, the longest active streak in the Majors (2nd: ARI - 58G)

  • The Mets streak of hitting a home run in 15 straight games game to an end, as did their unbeaten record of 16 straight games when the starting pitcher goes 6 innings or more.

Turning Point

Trailing, 1-0 in the third, with Mark Canha on second after his lead off single to left field and a steal of second, he moved over to third base on a fielding error by first baseman Vladimir Guerrero on Francisco Alvarez's slow roller. The Mets were in prime position to tie the game with runners on first and third and no one out with the top of the lineup up. Chris Bassitt got Brandon Nimmo to pop out to third baseman Matt Chapman, struck out Francisco Lindor looking and ended the inning by getting Jeff McNeil to pop out to third baseman Matt Chapman in foul territory making Springer's Dinger the game winning hit.

Three Keys

Chris Bassitt faced the Mets for the 1st time in his career, the 30th opponent he has faced . With his wife due with his second child Bassitt pitched a gem. His final line 101 pitches thrown over 7.2 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs and 8 strike outs. The Mets were shutout for the eighth time this season equalling the amount they were blanked all of last season.

The Jays outfield, while not overly flashy Kevin Kiermaier covered a lot of ground making two nice plays, and George Springer made a terrific diving catch on Pete Alonso.

Daulton Varsho loves New York as he had hits in all six of his games vs. New York last season...Went 7-for-23 (.304) with four runs scored, two home runs, four RBI, and two walks for a .911 OP and added a 2 run jack in his first game against the Mets tonight.
