Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Today's Seat on the Korner goes to Reed Garrett. The righty reliever entered the game in the 6th with the Mets down 1-0 and held the Pirates scoreless for two vital innings, striking out the side in both innings, and giving the Mets the chance to mount their comeback.

Need to Know

  • With the victory, the Mets clinched their 4th series win in a row, and went above .500 for the first time since June 3, 2023, when they were 30-29 (317 days ago).

  • The go-ahead run scored on a balk by Pirates reliever Jose Hernandez before he threw his first pitch.

  • The Mets pitchers lowered their NL-leading ERA to 3.33 (57 ER/154 IP).

  • With his 17 strikeouts, Reed Garrett leads all MLB relievers in K's. He is also the first pitcher on the Mets to record a second win (seven other pitches each have 1).

  • Third baseman Brett Baty was removed from the game after the 6th inning due to left hamstring tightness. Manager Carlos Mendoza provided an update after the game and declared Baty day-to-day. Baty's mid-game replacement, Joey Wendle, drove home the game-tying run with an opposite-field double.

  • Pirates starting pitcher, Jaret Jones was removed after 5 innings and only 59 pitches, as Pittsburgh is trying to limit his workload. Fifty of his 59 pitches were thrown for strikes.

  • With Edwin Diaz unavailable after pitching in 2 straight games, Drew Smith earned the save, the 4th of his career.

Turning Point

With 2 outs, runners on second and third, and the score tied 1-1, the Pirates relieved Luis L. Ortiz with Jose Hernandez. Jeff McNeil came up to bat and before Hernandez threw his first pitch he was called for a balk. Alonso scored from third, giving the Mets a lead they would not relinquish. McNeil proceeded to double, bringing home Wendle as a welcomed insurance win, and they went on to win 3-1.

Three Keys

MR. JONES AND ME

Pirates rookie starter, Jared Jones, stymied the Mets for 5 innings, giving up just one hit, no walks, and striking out 7 before being removed after just 59 pitches. The Mets took advantage of the move by getting 3 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks against the next two Pittsburgh relievers, L.L. Ortiz and Jose Hernandez.

GO AHEAD, MR. WENDLE

Backup infielder, Joey Wendle took advantage of his opportunity by hitting a game-tying double and then scoring the go-ahead run. It was Wendle's third hit and first RBI as a member of the Mets.

MR. QONSISTENT

Jose Quintana has now at least 5 innings in 16 of his 17 starts with the Mets. While his high pitch count prevented him from going deeper tonight, he held the Pirates to 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4 over 5 innings. He was also helped out by some fine outfield work from Harrison Bader.
