Seat on the Korner: Justin Verlander

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Tonight's Seat on the Korner belongs to Justin Verlander, who had one of his classic outings by going 7 innings, striking out 6 and giving up no runs. Verlander also gave up 5 hits and 1 walk. He was confident in his abilities today, showcasing his classic sliders and curveballs consistently.

Need to Know

  • The Mets did not win one series in the month of June.

  • Tommy Pham continues his hot streak, hitting safely in 19 of his last 21 games by going 1-3 with 1 RBI.

  • Since the birth of his daughter, Francisco Lindor has hit .310 with 10 runs, 2 doubles, 4 home runs and 10 RBIs, he added onto that today with a home run.

  • Pete Alonso is now 0 for his last 8, recording no hits today with only a walk.

  • The Mets are now 24-11 when they score first.

  • The Mets are now 8 games below .500, 16 GB in the NL East.

Turning Point

It is safe to say that the turning point of the game occurred in the bottom of the third inning, when Francisco Alvarez, Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor all hit solo home runs to give the Mets a 3-0 lead, including back to back home runs between Nimmo and Lindor.

From there, the Giants were not able to catch up to the Mets well played defense today, only scoring one run. The Giants had a huge opportunity to come back into this game as with a fading Verlander, there was a man on first and second and the veteran Brandon Crawford was up to bat. However, Verlander held out for the rest of the inning, striking him out.

Three Keys

Brandon HIMmo: Being one of the hottest hitters on the Mets right now, Brandon Nimmo has been one of the hardest hitting on the Mets in the past few weeks. Now having 4 home runs in his last 5 games, Nimmo has an OPS of 1.105 in his last 7 games.

It's no surprise that we are seeing these kinds of stats from Brandon, he is one of the hardest working players on the team. Day in and day out, he gives it his all and consistently gives maximum effort.

Tommy Pham: Another hitter than has been stellar for the Mets despite their struggles has been Tommy Pham. Pham has hit safely in 19 of his last 21 games, including 3 of his last 4 games being multi hit games, and a hitting streak of 5 games.

Pham has been proving to be a wonderful pickup for the Mets. He has been the life that the Mets have needed, especially during their terrible month of June. It seems like at many times, he is the only one in the batters box that has been producing. It is important that the Mets realize how big of an asset he is, and see what they may be able to get for him nearing the end of the season.

June Glooms?: Finally, one of the worst months in the history of the franchise is over for the New York Mets. After going 7-19, it proved what the actual problem was for the Mets, hitting. Many people believe that pitching is the issue, which in many cases it is, the bullpen has blown many leads and has been careless. The pitching staff posted a 4.43 ERA, while the offense posted an atrocious .228 AVG in the month.

Time in and time out, we saw this with pitchers like Max Scherzer and Kodai Senga having good starts and then the offense not being able to support them. This happened on Wednesday and during Verlander's last start against Milwaukee.

Even though it may not seem like it, Justin Verlander has been great in his past few starts. He has given up 5 runs in his last 4 starts and has struck out 22 in those starts.
