Seat on the Korner: Harrison Bader

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

We crown the star of the game and extend a virtual invitation to the esteemed Seat on the Korner, tonight, to Harrison Bader. In the top of the 8th inning, Bader singled on a ground ball to center fielder Brandon Marsh, which was deflected by pitcher Jeff Hoffman. This pivotal hit allowed Tyrone Taylor to score, tying the game at 3, with Pete Alonso advancing to 3rd and Bader himself reaching 2nd. Then, in the top of the 11th inning, Bader's heroics continued as he doubled on a ground ball to left fielder Whit Merrifield. This set the stage for J.D. Martinez to advance to 3rd, and eventually score on a wild pitch, clinching the winning run for the team.

Turning Point

The turning point of the game was quite obviously the bottom of the 10th inning with the score tied at 4 and the ghost runner poised as the winning run at second to start the inning. J.T. Realmuto took his place at 2nd base, setting a tense stage. A pitching change saw Jorge López replace Edwin Díaz who had just blown his second save in a row, and López immediately opted to intentionally walk Bryce Harper, putting Harper on 1st and Realmuto on 2nd. Alec Bohm then grounded into a critical double play, expertly executed by third baseman Mark Vientos to second baseman Jeff McNeil to first baseman Pete Alonso, advancing Realmuto to 3rd but eliminating Harper and Bohm. With two outs and the pressure mounting, Nick Castellanos lined out to left fielder Tyrone Taylor, ending the inning without a run scored and preserving the tie.

Diaz(ed) and Confused.

Edwin Díaz experienced his second blown save of the week and third of the season in a crucial moment during the bottom of the ninth, with the Mets clinging to a 4-3 lead. Díaz was called in to replace Adam Ottavino and immediately faced Brandon Marsh, who walked. A wild pitch followed, allowing Marsh to advance to 2nd. Kody Clemens then struck out swinging for the first out. Bryson Stott capitalized on the situation with a single to right fielder Starling Marte, driving in Marsh and tying the game at 4. Stott further added pressure by stealing 2nd base, but Díaz managed to strike out Kyle Schwarber for the second out. The inning concluded with J.T. Realmuto lining out sharply to second baseman Jeff McNeil. Despite Díaz's efforts, the blown save shifted the momentum, setting the stage for the extra innings drama.
