Seat on the Korner: DJ Stewart
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
Today's Seat on the Korner belongs to DJ Stewart, who came in clutch in the top of the 9th by driving in the winning runs with a double into the gap of right. Stewart has 4 doubles and 21 RBIs while batting .328 in his last 17 games .
Need to Know
Today was quite the Pitcher's Duel, as both teams only recorded 6 hits and no runs before the top of the 9th inning.
It is not without notice that pitching was very clutch today for the Mets, striking out the Twins 9 times and only giving up 4 hits. Tylor Megill was the starter today, going 5 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2.
Pablo Lopez was stellar for the Twins today, going 8 innings, giving up only 2 hits and striking out a whopping 14 batters.
Even though he went 0-4 today, Ronny Mauricio has been very impressive for the Mets, safely hitting in 6 of his first 8 career games.
Turning Point
The turning point of the game was of course in the top of the 9th when DJ Stewart hit a huge double in the gap, scoring both Lindor and McNeil to earn the games first and only runs.
From there, the Mets were able to hold off the Twins' from scoring after Carlos Correa doubled and Ottavino walked Donovan Solano.
Three Keys
Tylor Megill and David Peterson: Even though this has not been the best for Tylor Megill, posting a 5.03 ERA this season, today was looking up for him:
Pitchers that struggled in the beginning of the year are starting to have better outings, such as the likes of David Peterson as well. After posting a quality start yesterday by going 6 innings and striking out 8, Peterson seems to be earning his way into the rotation.
Francisco Alvarez: In the bottom of the 7th inning, Francisco Alvarez was taken out of the game as a precaution after being hit by a pitch on his hand. The X-rays came back negative, and Buck Showalter said "We’ll see how it manages tomorrow and see if we have to take another. We feel good right now though all things considered.
Hitting: One of the biggest struggles of this Mets' season has been providing run support and staying patient at the plate, and today's game just proved that even more.
The Mets only collected 4 hits today, and struck out a whopping 16 times, one less than their season high of 17.
