During the third inning of Friday's Mets/Phillies game, it was announced that Eduardo Escobar was traded to the Los Angeles Angels for two minor league pitchers: Coleman Crow and Landon Marceaux.
A trade like this seemed inevitable. The Mets are in desperate need of any sort of pitching, and Escobar had lost playing time with the emergence of Brett Baty. With Anthony Rendon going on the IL, the trade seemed to be a perfect match for all parties. The only surprising part of the trade was that Escobar seemed to be such a good mentor for Baty, and there seemed to be some value in that. But obviously not as much value as the two minor league arms that they received in return.
Francisco Lindor discussed losing Escobar while he was mic'd up during tonight's broadcast:
Escobar was hitting .236 with an OPS of .695 in 120 at-bats this season, but his production picked up when he became more of a part time player. Meanwhile, Crow was 11-3 with a 4.38 ERA with 159 K's in 152 innings over the last two seasons at AA, while Marceaux also spent parts of the last two seasons in AA and has a 5.15 ERA in 64 and 2/3's innings in AA. Crow seems to have the higher ceiling of the two.
