Former Met puts current Mets to bed in sleepy Sacramento loss

Updated: 5 hours ago

WP - J.T. Ginn (1-0)

Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

On a day where the production was truly spread out for the (Your City Here) Athletics, we'll go with J.T. Ginn ... the pitcher who went the other way in the Chris Bassitt trade. Ginn scattered four hits and two walks in 5 and 1/3 innings, and the lineup and bullpen took it from there in a 3-1 loss on Saturday.

Need to Know

  • Every batter in the Athletics' starting lineup had exactly one hit on the day.

  • David Peterson pitched well, giving up two runs on 7 hits and zero walks while striking out five in six innings, but was victimized by one bad inning and a lack of run support.

  • Brandon Nimmo's solo HR was the only run on the day, and Nimmo's second home run in as many games at Sutter Health Park.

  • The Athletics bullpen gave up just one hit in 3 and 2/3's while striking out four hitters. Closer Mason Miller gave up the only hit in the ninth, surprisingly.

  • Jose Siri left the game in the 2nd after fouling a ball off his shin. The bruise will keep him out day-to-day. X-rays were negative.

Turning Point

David Peterson was solid today. But in the 4th inning, the second time through the lineup, he wasn't fooling anyone. Jacob Wilson's double: 101.4 mph. Brent Rooker fly out: 100.1 mph. Tyler Soderstrom's RBI single: 104.1 mph. Shea Langeliers single: 108.5 mph. Miguel Andujar single: 98.9 mph. JJ Bleday RBI groundout: 97.1 mph. They were hitting rockets off him that inning, and when your team isn't hitting for you, that's enough.

Three Keys

J.T. You Were With Me

The pitcher who was traded from the Mets to Oakland for Chris Bassitt was excellent in his 5 and 1/3. He came into the game with a .158 opponents batting average against his slider with 14 K's. Today, it was the sinker that he used most, throwing 55 of them for 13 strikes, and 10 of his outs came via the sinker.

Opportunity Lost

The Mets had one great against Ginn. Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto walked with one out in the third, and Pete Alonso worked out a ten pitch at-bat against Ginn. But while the hitter usually has the advantage in long at-bats, Ginn broke out a nasty sinker to put Alonso away.

Nimmo grounded out to end that threat.

You Know Your Offense Is Asleep ...

When the most excited your fans get is a foul ball.

Luis Torrens' foul ball off the hard throwing Mason Miller in the 9th was just a few feet from being an Omir Santos type moment, but it was just a few feet foul, and after a wild pitch, Miller would retire Torrens on a grounder to short to end the game.
