Freddy Peralta dazzles, Brewers rout Mets in matinee

Game 5 of 162

Brewers 10 - Mets 0 (American Family Field, Milwaukee)

Mets record: 3-2

Mets streak: Lost 1

WP - Freddy Peralta (1-0)

LP - Carlos Carrasco (0-1)

SV - Bryse Wilson (1)

Seat on the Korner: Freddy Peralta

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9

broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Freddy Peralta allowed two hits across six shutout innings while striking out seven Met hitters in the process. The 26-year-old burgeoning star dealt with a nagging shoulder that limited his availability a season ago, but all signs point to a strong rebound year for Peralta.

Need to Know

  • Carlos Carrasco’s 2023 campaign got off to a rocky start as the 36-year-old right-hander was unable to get through five innings, allowing five runs on four hits.

  • Tommy Hunter, in relief of Carrasco, took one on the chin, allowing five runs across two innings.

  • Eduardo Escobar received the day off after a 1-16 start at the plate.

  • Daniel Vogelbach recorded his 2nd hit of the season, however, the hefty DH was thrown out at second base while trying to leg out a double.

  • Luis Guillorme started at third base and was 2-4, his first two hits of the season. Guillorme also toed the rubber for the third time in his MLB career, pitching a clean bottom half of the 8th inning.

  • Mark Canha, who led Major League Baseball in seconds between pitches thrown last season, struck out via a pitch clock violation in the 9th inning.

  • Jeff McNeil, in the 8th inning and with the game out of reach, made his first career appearance at shortstop.

  • The Mets will try to rebound Tuesday night as Max Scherzer is set to face veteran lefty Wade Miley in the penultimate game of this three-game set.

Turning Point

With the Mets on the ropes, Brewers' fourth-ranked prospect Brice Turang stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and a chance to land the proverbial knockout blow. Turang, Milwaukee’s 23-year-old starting second basemen, sent a Hunter changeup into orbit, hitting a grand slam for his first major league home run. Turang’s 104.2 MPH bomb put the finishing touches on what was a total demolition for the Brew Crew.

Three Keys

Carrasco concerns

Carrasco labored through his first start of the season. He committed two pitch clock violations while his 4-Seam Fastball, which averaged 93.2 MPH in 2022, was a pedestrian 91.1 MPH in his 2023 debut. He admittedly grew tired in the 4th and 5th innings, when his fastball velocity dipped under 90 MPH. One of the few bright spots of Carrasco's outing was the efficiency of his changeup, which registered an elite 50% whiff rate.

Tim Locastro; the new Mark Canha

Another day, another HBP. Through four plate appearances this season, Tim Locastro has been hit by a pitch three times. Mark Canha’s two-year run as HBP king may be in serious jeopardy if Locastro keeps this up.

Nimmo’s patience

Despite Brandon Nimmo’s early season batting average woes, the 30-year-old centerfielder has still shown a propensity to reach base at a high rate. With six walks through five games, Nimmo ranks 2nd in Major League Baseball, two behind pacesetter Miguel Vargas of the Dodgers.
