Seat on the Korner: Will Smith

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Will Smith takes the spotlight after his impressive performance. Following his first-inning home run in Game 2 of yesterday's doubleheader, Smith went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs. His eighth-inning homer his 100th of his career gave the Dodgers a 4-3 lead, which they held onto to complete a three-game sweep of the series. Over the series, Smith was 4-for-13 with three home runs, three RBIs, and four runs scored..

Need to Know

  • Before Wednesday afternoon's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Mets officially placed Edwin Diaz on the 15-day IL due to a right shoulder impingement. The right-hander has struggled significantly at the start of this season, having missed all of last year with a patella tendon injury sustained while celebrating at the World Baseball Classic. Diaz's velocity and command were off early in the year, resulting in his removal from the closer role after blowing three saves in six outings.

  • To add to their troubles, shortly after the Mets placed Edwin Díaz on the injured list, Pete Alonso was hit by a pitch and had to leave today's game with an apparent hand injury.

  • The Mets are in a stretch of 13 straight games and are in the midst of 26 games in 27 days...New York is 4-15 in that span.

  • The Mets are in a 10-game homestand (1-4) against San Francisco (1-2), Los Angeles-NL (0-3) and Arizona (four games)..

  • The Mets were swept for the third time this season and the second time at home...The Mets were swept by the Brewers in the opening series this season as well as the Rays in Tampa Bay...The last time the Dodgers swept the Mets was from August 13-15, 2021 in New York.

  • Francisco Lindor is on a eight-game hitting streak...He is batting .314 (11-35) with three runs, four doubles, one home run, four RBI, two walks in that span.

  • David Peterson made his first start of the season. The southpaw has started the season on the 60-Day IL after undergoing left hip surgery in the off-season.In six rehab starts this year, Peterson is 2-1 with a 1.52 ERA (3 ER/23.2 IP) with three walks and 35 strikeouts. Petersons line on the day was 5 innings pitched, seven hits, 2 earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts.

  • James Paxton faced the Mets for the first time this season and it is the fifth time in his career he has faced the Mets. He is 2-1 . . He was pitching on regular rest for the first time this season and threw three innings of shutout baseball.

Turning Point

Once again, the Dodgers managed to snatch victory from the New York Mets, with the pivotal events, just like in Game 1 yesterday, occurring in the top of the eighth inning.

Will Smith led off the inning with a solo home run to left-center field, giving the Dodgers a 4-3 lead. Following Smith's homer, Teoscar Hernández struck out swinging for the first out. Jason Heyward then entered as a pinch-hitter and tripled to right field, putting the pressure on the Mets. Gavin Lux came in as another pinch-hitter and walked, followed by stealing second base, setting the stage for Miguel Rojas. Rojas singled to left, allowing Heyward to score and Lux to advance to third, extending the lead to 5-3. A mound visit and a pitching change brought Jorge López to the mound, but his attempt to pick off Rojas at first resulted in a throwing error, advancing Rojas to second and Lux to third. Miguel Vargas capitalized on the situation, doubling to right field and scoring both Rojas and Lux, pushing the score to 7-3. Mookie Betts then flew out to center for the second out. Shohei Ohtani added to the Mets' woes with a two-run homer, making it 9-3. Freddie Freeman walked, but the inning finally ended when Will Smith flew out sharply to center field.

This eighth-inning rally allowed the Dodgers to secure a 9-3 lead, which they maintained to complete the three-game sweep of the series.

Three Keys

Pen Pals

The Los Angeles Dodgers relied on three former Mets pitchers in relief of James Paxton during their latest game. Yohan Ramírez was the first to take the mound, pitching a scoreless fourth inning and keeping the Mets' bats at bay. He was followed by Elieser Hernández, who spent time with the Mets' minor league system last season. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, Hernández struggled in the fifth inning, failing to record an out and surrendering the three-run lead. Anthony Banda then took over in the sixth, delivering a solid performance by pitching a scoreless inning and stabilizing the game for the Dodgers.

Say "Hey"Ward

The 34-year-old Jason Heyward, who is slowly coming back from injury, entered the game in the 8th inning as a pinch hitter. Over the course of two innings, he achieved 50% of a cycle by tripling in the eighth and following it up with a home run in the ninth.

Miguel Rojas

Miguel Rojas after going 4 for 5 on the day now has a .254 batting average with 97 hits, 6 homers, 43 RBIs and 41 runs scored in 123 games against the Mets in his career.
