Hey Mr. DJ! Stewart's 3-Run HR the Difference in Win

Mets 4 Cubs 2 (Citi Field, Flushing, NY)

Mets record: 15-14

Mets streak: Won 1

WP - Reid-Foley (1-0)

LP - Alzolay (1-3)

SV - Lopez (2)

Seat on the Korner: DJ Stewart

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

After two-time Gold Glove winning shortstop Dansby Swanson's error earlier in the inning allowed JD Martinez to reach base, Mets outfielder DJ Stewart made the Cubs pay with a 2-out 3-run home run to the second deck in right field to give the Mets a 4-1 lead. The home run was Stewart's fourth of the season and gave him 14 RBI, which is third best on the team behind Brandon Nimmo (18) and Pete Alonso (15).

Need to Know

  • Over the last three games, Mets starters have posted a 1.28 ERA (3 ER/21 IP) with 7 walks and 11 strikeouts.

  • Reliever Reed Garrett continued his early-season success tonight. With his one inning of hitless relief, Garrett has allowed just one run in 15.2 innings so far this year.

  • After allowing two runs in his first two appearances, Adam Ottavino has made eight scoreless appearances (8.2 innings pitched). He has not allowed a hit and issued only one walk in those 8.2 innings, striking out 15 in that span.

  • The Mets bullpen gave up 1 run in 4 innings tonight, lowering their season ERA to a National League best 2.85

  • The Mets are now 195-184 lifetime when playing the Cubs at home.

  • Hot Dog! Tonight was "Dollar Hot Dog Night" at Citi Field. In all, 44,269 hot dogs were sold. A franchise record, apparently.

Turning Point

A one-out error by the Cubs usually sure-handed shortstop, Dansby Swanson, on a JD Martinez grounder began the bottom of the 6th rally. A two-out single by Tyrone Taylor set the stage for DJ Stewart, whose three-run blast put the Mets ahead to stay.

Three Keys

Unwise Guy

The Mets first run was aided by a Cubs error, as well. In the first inning, Francisco Lindor, who had singled with one out, was picked off by Cubs starter Javier Assad. However, an errant throw by Cubs first baseman Patrick Wisdom allowed Lindor to reach third. Pete Alonso soon drove him home with a sacrifice fly.

It Takes A Village

After two straight 8-inning games by Mets starting pitchers, Sean Manaea, tonight's starter was only able to go 5 due to some command issues. Manaea gave up 3 hits, 1 run, walking 4, and striking out 3, after 92 pitches. He turned the ball over to the bullpen who proceeded to hold the Cubs to 1 hit, 1 run, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts over the remaining 4 innings.

It's Been A While

Reliever Sean Reid-Foley earned the win tonight, his first major league win since June 16, 2021, which also came against the Cubs in Citi Field.
