James McCann's five RBI dooms Mets (Yes, you read that right)

Orioles 10 Mets 3 (Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, MD)

Mets record: 50-59

Mets streak: Lost 4

WP - Mike Baumann (9-0)

LP - Phil Bickford (2-4)

Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

You saw this coming, right? Of course you did, if you're a Mets fan of any length of time. James McCann, who had 10 RBI this season, brought home five runs on three hits against his former team to lead Baltimore to a 10-3 victory on Friday night.

Need to Know

  • Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte both returned from injuries tonight. Nimmo walked twice while Marte went 0-for-3 with a three pitch strikeout.

  • David Peterson's return to the starting rotation was relatively successful, as he only went three innings, and threw a 28 pitch first inning. He also walked three. But he didn't give up any runs in 52 pitches.

  • Francisco Lindor went 2-for-3 with a double in the first and a two run single in the 6th.

  • Phil Bickford gave up four runs in the 6th while Reid Garrett gave up four runs in the 7th. Jordan Westburg's three run HR in the 7th was the big blow.

Turning Point

Dean Kremer was crusing through five innings. Then in the 6th after getting the first out, he walked Rafael Ortega, Brandon Nimmo, and Francisco Alvarez. Francisco Lindor then brought home Ortega and Nimmo with a single to tie the game. The O's then brought in Mike Baumann, 8-0 on the year, to face Alonso with runners on first and third and one out.

Alonso would hit into a double play to end the inning and the threat.

The Orioles would score four in the bottom of the 6th and four in the bottom of the 7th to tuck the game neatly in their back pockets.

Three Keys

Suddenly, McCann Can: McCann hit .220 as a Met, driving home 64 runs in 186 games. His average as an Oriole coming into the game was .197.

Tonight? Three hits, five RBI. Oh, and a stolen base to boot.

Get used to this: When the Mets traded David Robertson and rearranged their bullpen, you knew that nights like this would happen. And they're going to happen frequently. With Buck exhausting everyone in the pen with Peterson going short in his first start in weeks, and Tylor Megill returning to the rotation tomorrow, a night like this where the Mets 'pen give up 10 runs in six innings might happen a few more times this week.

A wide gulf: A game like this shows you just how far apart these teams are. After Lindor's double in the first, he tried to steal third with two outs and Alonso up. A bad philosophical play to begin with. But when Dean Kremer stepped off to pick Lindor off, you saw right then which team was playing heads up and which team was playing reckless.

McCann stole a base on them in the 6th. Gunnar Henderson took an extra base on Danny Mendick in left field. The Orioles were making plays all over the diamond while the Mets were getting out-worked, out-thought, and out-hustled in the field. I don't know if it's the team being shellshocked by the events of the season and the deadline, or if the team is just undermanned, or if the remaining Mets have just gone into a fog and have, without knowing it, thrown in the towel on the season.

It's going to be a long two months.
