Seat on the Korner: Sean Manaea

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Tonight's Seat on the Korner belongs to Sean Manaea, who delivered an another impressive performance on the mound. Manaea pitched five strong innings, limiting the Reds' offense to just three hits and one run, issuing only two walks while striking out six batters in route to his first win as a New York Met.

Need to Know

  • In Sean Manaea's first career start with the Mets, April 1 vs. Detroit, he did not allow a hit through his first 5.2 innings...It was the longest no-hit bid by a Mets pitcher in their team debut and the second-longest no-hit bid by a Mets pitcher in their first career start with team...Tracy Stallard threw 6.0 no-hit in his first career start with the Mets on June 2, 1963 vs. Pittsburgh.

  • Sean Manaea joined Kenny Rogers (7/2/28/99) as the only Mets pitcher to allow one hit and throw 6.0 or more innings in their team debut.

  • Sean Manaea recorded eight strikeouts, which tied Johan Santana (3/31/08) for the most punch outs by a Mets left-handed pitcher in their team debut and were tied for the seventh-most by any Mets pitcher int their team debut. (Credit Elias)

  • Coming into play today The Mets’ .615 winning percentage (40-25) at Great American Ball Park is the highest of any National League team.

  • Entering this season the Reds are seeking their fourth winning season over a 5-year span for the first time since 1985-1990 when they recorded 6 winning seasons in a seven year span.

  • Spencer Steer's go-ahead 3-run homer in the eighth inning to propel the Reds to a 9-6 victory yesterday off NYM's RHP Yohan Ramírez, was Steer’s second go-ahead HR after the seventh inning, making him the first Reds batter to hit multiple go-ahead HRs in the eighth inning or later within a 5-game stretch since Joey Votto did it in 2015 (8/29 at Mil and 9/2 at Chicago).

  • Reds starter Andrew Abbott Is making his second start of the season and his second ever vs NYM (9/16/23 at Citi Field).

  • Francisco Lindor went one for one and a walk, and Francisco Alvarez was one for three with a double against Abbott in the one prior game against Abbott.

  • Francisco Alvarez recorded his first career multi-homer game at Great American Ballpark on May 9,2023.

Turning Point

Today's turning point came in the second inning when the Mets scored a run without a hit. Starling Marte started off the inning with a walk, followed by Tyrone Taylor's bunt single, and then Jeff McNeil's bunt single. This marked the first occurrence of back-to-back bunt singles for the Mets since June 2010 when Alex Cora and Jose Reyes achieved the same feat. Despite Harrison Bader lining out for the first out, Andrew Abbott then hit Brandon Nimmo, allowing Starling Marte to score, ultimately securing the winning run.

Three Keys

THE DEFENSE RESTS

Following yesterday's brutal defensive eighth inning, the Mets played a defensively sound game today. A crucial double play aided in getting Sean Manaea out of a bases-loaded predicament in the bottom of the fourth inning.

And Tyrone Taylor's impressive catch set the tone in the following frame.

FRANCISCO FINDING STROKE

Yesterday, Francisco Lindor showed some signs of breaking out with several well-struck balls for outs. Prior to the game, Lindor had been enduring a challenging 1-for-31 slump, including an 0 for 24 clip, marking the most prolonged downturn of his career. However, he may have turned the tide, today with a 2-for-5 performance, including a double and a home run, signaling a potential return to form for the Mets talented shortstop.

PERFECT PENMANSHIP

The Mets bullpen, heavily relied upon in the early stages of the season, was tasked with securing the final 12 outs while safeguarding a narrow 2-run lead. Jorge Lopez, Brooks Raley, Adam Ottavino, and Edwin Diaz each delivered impeccable performances, tossing a scoreless and hitless inning apiece. Their collective effort proved pivotal in clinching a hard-fought 3-1 victory for the Mets, marking their third win in the last four games and securing their first series win of the season
