Mets collapse, losing streak extends to 6

Seat on the Korner: Orlando Arcia

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

With plenty of potential "Seat on the Korner" candidates to choose from, Orlando Arcia earns the top spot after his 9th-inning heroics. Arcia, who will also be featured in the Turning Point section of this recap, had a night to remember. The 28-year-old middle infielder continued his strong 2023 with three hits, none bigger than his 9th inning. 414-foot moonshot that squared the game at ten runs apiece.

Need to Know

  • Justin Verlander struggled right out of the gate, allowing three runs (two earned) in the very first inning. Verlander also issued a season-high four walks through only three innings of action.

  • Francisco Alvarez continued his strong rookie season with two more blasts, increasing his season total to 11.

  • Starling Marte made up for his 1st inning fielding blunder with a three-hit night at the dish.

  • Brandon Nimmo’s 2nd inning grand slam gave New York its first lead of the night, one that would eventually vanish in the later innings.

  • The Mets will look to end their longest losing streak in four seasons as they travel to Pittsburgh where Tylor Megill will get the ball in the series opener.

Turning Point

  • If the Mets have learned anything in this three-game stretch, it's that no lead is safe. That was never more true than in tonight’s affair where a one-run lead with two outs to go was squandered with one swing of the bat. Orlando Arcia, who earned his first Seat on the Korner, unloaded on his 5th home run of the season and tied the game at 10. The Braves would go on to walk New York off in the following inning and complete the three-game sweep.

3 Keys

Another one

For the first time in over 60 years, the Mets have lost three straight games where they have held a 3+ run lead in each.

Alvarez again

Francisco Alavrez’s power surge is real. The budding superstar eclipsed double-digit round-trippers on Thursday night and is starting to look like a must-start every time the Mets take the field.

Drew Smith's struggles

Confidence in Drew Smith is beginning to wain as the hard-throwing right-hander falters in yet another high-leverage situation. Smith's ERA is up to 4.37 and will likely be used in more conservative game scripts from now on.
