Game 64 of 162
Pirates 14 - Mets 7 (PNC PARK, Pittsburgh)
Mets record: 30-34
Mets streak: Lost 7
WP - Rich Hill (6-5)
LP - Tylor Megill (5-4)
Seat on the Korner: Ke'Bryan Hayes
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
With plenty of potential "Seat on the Korner" candidates to choose from, as very Pirate starter had at least one hit, Ke'Bryan Hayes earns the top spot as he entered the game having hit safely in each of his last seven games, going 14-for-29 with a double, two triples, two home runs and seven RBI. He continued his torrid pace going 5 for 5 and driving in 4 of the Pirates fourteen runs.
Need to Know
The Mets made a series of roster moves prior to the start of the game, INF Pete Alonso has been placed on the 10-Day IL, retroactive to June 8, with left wrist bone bruise and sprain, however Pete is expected to be out 3-4 weeks. Former Yankee, Long Island Duck and Met 43 year old Lefty Rich Hill had not faced the Mets since allowing two runs in 6.0 innings in a no-decision on 5/28/19 as a member of the Dodgers. He entered the game 2-2 with a 6.69 ERA (35.0ip/26er) in nine career appearances (seven starts) .
Andrew McCutchen 3rd inning single leaves him one hit shy of 2000 in his career (his first career hit came in his big league debut against Mike Pelfrey of the Mets on June 4, 2009)...McCutchen has recorded 1514 of his 1999 hits with the Pirates organization...McCutchen's 1514 hits with Pittsburgh ranks 12th in team history...Hall-of- Famer Roberto Clemente is first with 3000 while Tommy Leach is 11th (1603).
New York has now lost seven straight games, which is the longest stretch of the season...The last time the Mets dropped seven straight was in 2019, from June 23-29.
Francisco Lindor has now hit in five straight games and hit his 12th home run of the season, eight of them have come on the road.
The Mets will look to end their longest losing streak in game two of the three game set against Pittsburgh when RHP Kodai Senga (5-3, 3.75 ERA) takes on RHP Johan Oviedo (3-4, 4.29 ERA) at 4:05 pm tomorrow.
Turning Point
One 1/2 inning after tying the score at 2, Tylor Megill gave up an infield hit to Andrew McCutchen, Carlos Santana reached on a fielders choice error, Megill seemed to lose his concentration walking Jack Suwinski loading the bases. Ke'Bryan Hayes drove in 2 with a single, Ji Hwan Bae executed a safety squeeze that Eduardo Escobar committed the second error of the inning, Josh Palacios followed with an RBI single extending the Bucs lead to 7-2.
3 Keys
Starting Pitchers Can't Hold Lead, Can't Go Deep.
The Mets have now lost four straight games where they have held a lead in each.Once again a Mets starter failed to go deep as Tylor Megill lasted 3.2 innings coughing up 8 hits, 9 runs, 7 earned and saw his ERA jump from 4.40 to 5.14
Relievers Can't Stop the Bleeding
Newly recalled Zach Muckenhirn let both inherited runners to score and gave up 3 more of his own to make a 7-2 game 12-2, and not to be left out Tommy Hunter gave up a back to back jacks Carlos Santana and Jack Suwinski to make it a 14-2 game.
364 Million reasons to be angry and frustrated.
With a payroll of roughly $364 million Steve Cohen certainly expects more from what he is currently getting from this group. The old baseball adage is" You can't fire 25 players, so you fire the manager" I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon, however Buck needs to stop making excuses, buffet tables, water coolers, toilets need to be broken, there seems to be no anger or noticeable frustration from this group, someone needs to light a fire.
