Mets rally falls short in 4-2 loss to Padres

Game 12 of 162

Padres 4 - Mets 2 (Citi Field, Flushing, NY)

Mets record: 6-6

Mets streak: Lost 1

WP – Ryan Weathers (1-0)

LP – David Peterson (0-2)

SV - Josh Hader (4)

Seat on the Korner

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Machado was 1-for-4 with a clutch, two-out, two-run double in the 5th inning that gave the Padres a 2-1 lead. The third-baseman also dazzled with his range and arm defensively in the 4-2 win.

Need to Know

*The inconsistent Mets offense again came up short against a lefthanded starter. New York managed only five hits on the night, all singles.

*The Mets entered play batting .207 with RISP and were 1-for-8 with men in scoring position Tuesday.

*Padres starter Ryan Weathers outdueled New York's David Peterson in a battle of lefties. The son of former Mets reliever David Weathers (who was at Citi Field watching his son Tuesday) allowed one run, three hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings of work.

*Francisco Lindor barely missed a go-ahead three-run home run in the 8th inning with the Mets trailing 2-1. But with two on and two out, Lindor pulled a high Steven Wilson fastball into the upper deck in right, but clearly foul. He proceeded to chase a pitch low and out of the zone to strike out and end the inning.

*Francisco Alvarez made his second start behind the plate on this homestand and was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Alvarez looked overanxious and overmatched, and left three men on base.

*The Mets were trailing 2-1 in the top of the 9th inning when Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts crushed a two-run home run off Dennis Santana. It proved to be the difference when the Mets scored a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Turning Point

The Padres had been shut out the first 13.2 innings in this series before Machado's two-run double in the 5th inning. Machado won the duel from Peterson when he yanked a slider down the left field line on the seventh pitch of the at-bat. San Diego did not relinquish the lead after Machado's clutch hit.

3 Keys

Mets waste early scoring opportunities

The Mets had Weathers on the ropes right away in the 1st inning when a pair of walks sandwiched an infield single by Starling Marte. But with the bases loaded and none out, Pete Alonso struck out on an off-speed pitch down and in and Mark Canha bounced softly into a double play. Then in the bottom of the 4th inning, Francisco Lindor led off with a single and Alonso singled to right, putting runners on the corners with no outs. But Alonso was inexplicably picked off by Weathers before Canha delivered a Sac Fly to drive in the game's first run. Still, a second potential big inning was short-circuited.

9th inning rally falls short

Padres closer Josh Hader walked two and allowed an RBI single to Tommy Pham in the 9th inning. But with runners on second and third and two out, Alvarez struck out on a 3-2 pitch to end the game. Earlier in the at bat, the rookie catcher chased two high fastballs out of the zone to help out the struggling closer, who threw 31 pitches in the inning.

David Peterson bounces back with solid start for Mets

Peterson pitched a season-high 5.2 innings and allowed two runs and six hits. He struck out six and walked two in a bounce-back performance after surrendering five runs, five hits and five walks in his previous start, last Wednesday in Milwaukee against the Brewers.
