Nationals 11 Mets 6 (Citi Field, Flushing, NY)
Mets record: 49-55
Mets streak: Lost 1
WP - Patrick Corbin (7-11)
LP - Carlos Carrasco (3-5)
Seat on the Korner: Patrick Corbin
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
Patrick Corbin earns the seat tonight after pitching 5.2 innings. He gave up 4 runs, however his good performance was able to hold the Mets off and allowed the Nats to just pour in the runs.
Need to Know
The start of tonights game was pushed back to 8:30 PM due to forecast of Rain.
Prior to the game rumors of the Max Scherzer trade to Texas began to surface and was confirmed during the game.
The Mets will receive Luisangel Acuna the younger brother of Ronald. Luisangel is a middle infield, centerfield prospect, he will slot as one of the Mets top prospects once he arrives.
Carlos Carrasco followed up his last outing when he threw 2.1 innings against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on July 23 allowing five earned runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out two batters by going the same 2.1 innings this time giving up 8 runs, 6 earned on 8 hits b
The Mets looked like a defeated team giving up runs in the each of the first 3 innings.
The team had two errors tonight, which is one less than their season record for most errors in a game (3).
Turning Point
This season has really been a struggle for Carlos Carrasco, and tonight proved it even more. Tonight's turning point is the top of the first inning, where the Nationals came out swinging, scoring 4 runs, including a Dom Smith 2 run double.
With Cookie pitching only 4.2 innings in his past 2 starts, and giving up 11 earned runs, it is safe to say Cookie may not be a reliable starter anymore.
Three Keys
Max Scherzer: It can go without saying that no one can talk about tonights game without mentioning the huge trade that was made just before the game started.
I have been hearing mixed reviews about the trade, hearing that Max is "Washed" or not good anymore, and that the Mets won. Or that the Mets traded away an amazing pitcher for "one guy". All I know is that I believe Max wasn't the issue. Management and the front office has been so poor this season that the team had no choice but to get rid of him.
Although, the return was pretty good, which is what the Mets were hoping for:
Luisangel Acuna, who is the little brother of Ronald Acuna Jr, was one of the top prospects for the Rangers and a top 50 prospect in the MLB. It is safe to say that e will become one of the Mets top developments, and can certainly provide some hope for the future.
Play the Kids: Even though tonight looked down for the Mets, things looked up for Francisco Alvarez and Mark Vientos, who both put up good numbers tonight.
Alvarez went 1-4 tonight with a home run in the bottom of the 9th to try and put the Mets back into the game, hitting his 20th home run of the season at just 21 years old. He now has the most home runs among catchers in the MLB.
On the other hand, Mark Vientos went 2-4 tonight with 2 RBIs, including a double in the bottom of the 2nd and a home run in the bottom of the 9th, going back to back after Alvarez.
What's Next: So? What's next? Is Verlander going to be traded? It is tough to say, but all we know so far is that the Mets have proved that they are going to be complete sellers at the deadline, and I don't think it would surprise me, or anyone, if Verlander or another piece is traded.
It has been said that players such as Tommy Pham and Mark Cahna will be traded. A player like Pham would be a good asset to trade, since he has been stellar since joining the Mets. Trading him can certainly bring in a good return.
