Seat on the Korner:
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
Pete Alonso's two home runs and six RBI were all the Mets needed to cruise to victory over the Cubs and stop their six game losing streak at Citi Field on Monday.
Need to Know
Before the game, Brett Baty was sent down to AAA while Starling Marte was put in the IL with a groin injury. Abraham Almonte and Jonathan Arauz were brought up to fill their spots on the roster.
Pete Alonso's first inning home run was the 178th of his career, passing Ryan Howard for 4th place for most home runs in his first five seasons.
Pete Alonso's third inning home run gave him 18 multiple home run games, which is third on the Mets all time list.
For Alonso, it's his third game of at least two HR/five RBI game since July 25th.
Alonso's 6th RBI came on a single in the 8th off catcher Tucker Barhnart. For Alonso, it matches his career high for RBI in a game.
Kodai Senga went six innings in the victory, scattering seven hits and striking out eight while giving up two runs.
The game was delayed by rain for 2:09 before the top of the 7th. Senga went out to pitch while the groundscrew was putting the dry tack on the mound, but when Senga took a warmup pitched he slipped. So Buck Showalter decided to pull him from the game. Before Brooks Raley could warm up and enter the game, the umps decided to put the tarp on the field.
After the game resumed, Danny Mendick put the game away with a three run homer in the 7th. It was his first homer as a Met.
Turning Point
WIth the Mets up 3-0 on the strength of Alonso's first home run, the Cubs led off the third with two singles. Nico Hoerner worked the count to 3-2 and took a borderline pitch for strike three. If that's called a ball, it could have been a whole different inning with the bases loaded and nobody out.
Cody Bellinger would follow with a two out single to make it 3-1, but Senga would strike out Dansby Swanson to end the inning and end the threat. The 3-2 pitch to Hoerner changed the look of the entire inning.
Three Keys
Big Pete warming up again: Since July 20th, Alonso has an OPS of .998 with five HR's and 15 RBI in 68 plate appearances. He took a dip with an OPS of .738, but didn't they all, right? On Monday, Alonso took advantage of some home cookin'.
No smiles for Drew this time: Drew Smyly had been somewhat of a Mets killer in his career, going 4-0 with a 2.17 ERA in 29 innings spread out over seven games. Tonight, thanks mainly to Alonso, Smyly gave up seven runs in five plus innings.
Kodai finds his stuff: Senga, like most Mets, had trouble in his last start in Kansas City, and his was with a wet mound. The rain that fell during his start didn't help. Tonight, he got six innings in before the rains came, and he baffled the Cubs. He struck out six, but also got a lot of soft contact. Most of the 7 hits he gave up were on soft contact. Senga was on his game.
