Mets waste comeback, fall to Phillies in 10 and get mathetmatically eliminated from playoff spot

Phillies 5 Mets 4 10 innings (Citizens Bank Park Philadelphia, PA)

Mets record: 71-83

Mets streak: Lost 2

WP- Seranthony Dominguez (5-5)

LP - Adam Ottavino (1-6)

Seat on the Korner: Alec Bohm

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Tonight's seat on the Korner belongs to Alec Bohm, whose single in the 10th ended the game. Bohm was 2-for-5, scoring on JT Realmuto's three-run home run after bleeder single up the middle in the sixth.

Need to Know

  • With his infield single in the eighth, Jeff McNeil extended to 15 his streak of consecutive games reaching base.

  • Francisco Lindor's eighth inning homer, his 27th, was his first since Sept. 8.

  • The Phils' Kyle Schwarber had gone 0-for24 against the Mets before his third-inning double. Schwarber ended up with two hits, including an RBI single in the seventh.

  • Brett Baty hit his ninth home run in the ninth inning, tying the game at four, and then made a great defensive play in the bottom of the frame, momentarily giving the Mets some hope and helping to send the game into extra innings.

  • Weather permitting, Jose Quintana takes the mound against Zack Wheeler Saturday. The forecast, however, is not good.

  • With the loss, the Mets were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. The Phillies reduced their magic number to clinch to three.

Turning Point

Tonight's turning point of the game came in the top of the 10th when the Mets were unable to score. With Tim Locastro the ghost runner to start the inning, Francisco Alvarez grounded to third, freezing Locastro at second. Brandon Nimmo walked. Francisco Lindor, who homered in his previous at-bat, worked the count full, but, after some confusion over the count, struck out on what clearly was ball four. Jeff McNeil walked, but Pete Alonso struck out to end the inning. A cardinal rule for the visiting team in an extra inning game: You need to score the ghost runner, and probably need to score more to put pressure on the home team. The Mets' failure to plate Locastro pratically handed the Phils the game.

Three Keys

Another good Megill outing.

Tylor Megill pitched into the sixth, shutting out the Phils through five before clearly tiring. He hit Bryce Harper to start the inning hit some bad luck when Alex Bohm hit a bleeder up the middle that Francisco Lindor tried to flip a throw to get Harper on a force. Megill got Bryson Stott, but then gave up a three-run homer to JT Realmuto. It was Megill's seventh straight start going at least five innings and allowing three or fewer runs

Narvaez napping

Catcher Omar Narvaez had a night to forget. With the Mets seemingly having Phils starter Taijuan Walker on the ropes after consecutive singles by narvaez and Rafael Ortega, Narvaez got caught napping and was picked off second. Francisco Lindor struck out to end the inning and stifle a potential rally. In the seventh, he threw wildly on a Johan Rojas steal, allowing Rojas to steal third and score on Kyle Schwarber's single.

Tired Bullpen

On a night when Manager Buck Showalter said four of his relievers were unavailable because of recent heavy use, he was forced to dip into a tired bullpen as the game remained close and went into extra innings. Phil Bickford, Drew Smith and Brooks Raley squeaked by, but it's no surprise that a tired Adam Ottavino, looking gassed as he started to warm up in the bullpen, gave up a quick hit to Alec Bohm to end the game.
