Mike's Met Of The Month, May 2024: J.D. Martinez

When bad months in franchise history come to mind for the New York Mets, May 2024 will certainly qualify. Although it wasn't nearly as bad as last June, which all but sunk the Mets' season, a 9-19 performance in May this season has put them on the brink of disaster before the official start of summer.

There weren't many positive contributors for the Mets in May as nearly everyone struggled with consistency. Francisco Lindor did end the month on a 10-game hitting streak that offered some hope he will finally take off, but his poor start to May ruled him out of Met of the Month honors. Christian Scott also merited consideration for providing some long term hope for the rotation, but the Met of the Month honors for May will go to designated hitter J.D. Martinez.

In 26 games in May, Martinez led the team with a .268 batting average while slugging a team-high five home runs and driving in 13. Martinez also delivered in the clutch, slugging a go-ahead homer to help the Mets snap a three-game losing streak on May 30th and adding a critical insurance blast in last night's game that proved to be the difference in the team avoiding another disastrous loss.

This kind of hitting is what the Mets hoped for when they signed Martinez late in spring training and they will need more of it if they hope to avoid irrelevance by the summer. There is a good chance Martinez gets moved before the deadline if the Mets can't turn their season around but he should provide a good show for the fans in the interim.
