Morton throws salt on Mets wounds, fans 11 in Ozuna-led rout

Braves 7 Mets 0 (Truist Park, Atlanta, GA)

Mets record: 59-69

Mets streak: Lost 2

WP - Charlie Morton (13-10)

LP - Jose Quintana (1-5)

Seat on the Korner: Charlie Morton

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Charlie Morton was masterful, striking out 11 Mets over seven shutout innings, giving up two hits and walking only one -- unlike his last start against the Mets, when he walked six in five innings. Morton, in his 22nd career appearance against the Mets, evened his record against the team at 6-6. He is 2-1 against them this year.

Need to Know

  • With a single in the eighth, Francisco Lindor extended his hitting streak to 10 games. With a hitless game, Jeff McNeil's hitting streak ended at seven.

  • Also ending was the Mets' consecutive game home run streak. They had homered in nine straight games.

  • Sean Reid-Foley returned from 16 months on the IL after Tommy John surgery and pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

  • Reed Garrett became the latest victim of the pitch-well-and-be-sent-to Syracuse shuffle. Garrett, after throwing two scoreless innings Tuesday, was optioned to mske room for Reid-Foley.

  • After an off-day Thursday, the Mets return home to face the Angels Friday night. The big question is whether Shohei Ohtani will be available -- he left his game Wednesday with a tired arm. Ohtani was not scheduled to pitch in the series, but it was unclear whether the injury would keep him from hitting.

Turning Point

With Jose Quinanta clearly tiring in the sixth inning (his pitch count was high after struggling through the first two innings) but the score only 1-0, Austin Riley led off with a single. Marcell Ozuna, the Braves' hottest hitter against the Mets this series, doubled to center, scoring Riley, and Sean Murphy followed with a single, scoring Ozuna. It was all downhill for the Mets after that.

Three Keys

Marcell Ozuna continued to kill the Mets, with three hits (including a home run) and four RBI. Over the three-game series, Ozuna went eight for 11.

Bad footwork by DJ Stewart on the field cost the Mets. After getting the Mets' first hit -- a double in the top of the fifth -- Stewart slipped taking his secondary lead and was picked off by catcher Sean Murphy. In the bottom of the sixth, Stewart tripped trying to field Vaugh Grissom's fly ball, playing it into a triple that plated two and broke the game open.

The Mets could muster only three hits: two doubles by DJ Stewart and a single by Francisco Lindor. In particular, Francisco Alvarez continued to look lost at the plate as did Pete Alonso, who struck out three times. Brandon Nimmo also had a difficult night, with three strikeouts.
