No Smyly faces as Drew and Cubs end Mets 5 Game Winning Streak.

Game 49 of 162

Cubs 7 - Mets 2 (Wrigley Field, Chicago)

Mets record: 25-24

Mets streak: Lost 1

WP - Drew Smyly (5-1)

LP - Tylor Megill (5-3)

Seat on the Korner: Matt Mervis

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Matt Mervis was playing in his 14th game for Chicago since he was selected on May 5th from Triple-A Iowa after slashing .286/.402/.560 in 91 at bats with 27 runs (3rd in the International League), 6 home runs (10th), 27 RBIs (3rd), 18 walks (8th; as against 19 strikeouts), and 2 sacrifice flies. He collected his first multi RBI game tonight by driving in 3 runs, he matched his career high of 5 total bases.

Need to Know

  • The Mets have played 28 games on the road this year, the most in the majors...New York is 13-15 away from Citi Field in 2023

  • Not a Happy Birthday for Buck Showalter..as he lost his 1,602 game to go along with his 1,677 wins which places him 19th all-time in major league history...Showalter has now managed four teams to the Postseason...He is the fourth manager to accomplish that feat in major league history, joining Dusty Baker (five teams) and Billy Martin and Davey Johnson (four teams)... Showalter is the first manager in Mets history to record 100 victories in his first season with the club...He also joins Yogi Berra as the only managers to guide the Mets and Yankees into the playoffs.

  • Tylor Megill made his 11th start of the season.Megill had allowed three earned runs over his last two starts, going 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA (3 Er/11.0 IP). He did not fare so well tonight will in his first career start against the Cubs, as he did not make it out of the 4th inning giving up 6 runs/4 earned.

  • The Cubs Christopher Morel walked in the bottom of the second and scored on Yon Gomes single stretching his steak to 12 straight games with a run scored, which is second-longest in franchise history since 1900, joining Hank Sauer (13 games in 1954) ... thanks to Elias Sports Bureau. He hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh making him just the fourth player in MLB history (since at least 1901) to hit at least nine home runs in his first 12 games of the season, joining Luis Gonzalez (9 HR in 2001), Reggie Sanders (8 HR in 2001) and Aristides Aquino (8 HR in 2019 ).

  • Brandon Nimmo continues to rake on the road ,he has safely hit in seven straight road games, batting .448 (13-29)

  • Pete Alonso hit his 18th home run , which leads the majors leagues. After the Mets went five straight games without a home run, the Mets have homered in seven straight contests, hitting 14 home runs in that span .

Turning Point

  • With two outs in the bottom of the second and a runner on third, Yon Gomes hit a high chopper that Brett Baty charged and fielded and elected not to throw to first to try and get the slow footed Gomes for the third out. Three pitches later Matt Mervis took Megill deep to make it a 4-0 game.

3 Keys

Baby Blues

Two of the three Baby Mets, Brett Baty and Mark Vientos were in the starting lineup and had a tough night. Baty and Vientos were a combined 0-6 /3ks Vientos was lifted for a pinch hitter in the 6th in a big spot , and the Baty non-throw loomed large in the Mets loss and he had a throwing error in the 8th inning as well.

Drew had something to smile about

Cubs starter Drew Smyly came into the game sporing a 1.77 ERA (11 ER/56.0 IP) with a 3-2 record and a 0.80 WHIP in 11 starts at Wrigley Field dating to May 30 of last season ... he continued his stellar work at the friendly confines and after tonights 5 inning outing 4 hits, 2 runs, he now has allowed two runs or fewer in nine-straight starts since April 10,

No Magic 8 Ball

The Mets streak of taking the lead in the eight inning comes to an end at two, as there was no late inning magic tonight in Wrigley.
