Oh, those bases on balls! Verlander loses pitching duel with Urias due to wildness

Final score: Dodgers 6 Mets 0 (Citi Field, New York)

Mets record: 42-49

Mets streak: Lost 3

WP - Julio Urias (7-5)

LP - Justin Verlander (3-5)

Seat on the Korner: Julio Urias

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Tonight's Seat on the Korner belongs to Julio Urias, whose assortment of breaking pitches baffled Mets hitters after a leadoff near-home run by Brandon Nimmo. That was it for the home team over six innings, as Urias matched Mets starter Justin Verlander and then some. His final line: six innings, seven strikeouts, one hit and one walk, also in the first inning.

Need to Know

  • Brandon Nimmo led off the bottom of the first with a drive that initially was ruled a home run but on review was ruled to have hit the front of the fence and bounced back . He was awarded a double. Tommy Pham and Francisco Lindor failed to advance Nimmo, both striking out. That should have been an omen for what was to come.

  • For those of you scoring at home, MLB changed the winning pitcher of the April 27 game against the Washington Nationals, taking it away from Brooks Raley and giving it to David Robertson. Hope this doesn't retroactively cost someone a week in their fantasy league.

  • With his 30-day rehab clock expiring, the Mets activted Jose Quintana and DFA'd T.J. McFarland. Quintana is scheduled to start Wdnesday against the White Sox.

  • The Mets dropped to seven games below .500 and lost another game to the Braves in the standings. They are now 19.5 games behind in the NL East.

  • On a brighter note, the Mets anniunced that they had signed their top two draft picks, IF Colin Hiuck and RHP Brandon Sproat. The second signing is notable because they drafted Sproat last year, failed to signed him and then drafted him again this year after getting indications that this time, he would sign.

  • Kodai Senga starts Saturday against the Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin

Turning Point

Locked in a pitching duel with Julio Urias, and not having given up a hit, Justin Verlander walked the bases loaded in the fifth and then gave up a sinking line drive to Mookie Betts that Mark Canha seemed to have misplayed into the Dodgers' first hit, scoring Jason Heyward. Freddie Freeman followed with a double, plating James Outman and Miguel Rojas, and it was all downhill for the Mets from there.

Three Keys

Justin Verlander had control problems from the start, walking two in the first and throwing 25 pitches. He managed to hold the Dodgers in check into fifth, but noticably tired as he walked the bases loaded before giving up the line drive single to Mookie Betts. The line on Verlander: Five innings, 104 pitches, six walks (six strikeouts, too).

With Verlander unable to pitch into the sixth, Buck Showalter was forced to tap into the soft underbelly of the bullpen. David Peterson, moved to the pen as Jose Quintana joins the starting rotation, started his inning by walking J.D. Martinez and gave up two hits, including Miguel Rojas' RBI single. After Trevot Gott pitched a scoreless seventh, Dominic Leone and Drew Smith each gave up runs in their innings, putting the game out of reach. Not a good start if the Mets hope to make some sort of a run at a wild card berth.

The Mets' bats remained lifeless after Urias left the game, also failing to get a hit off three Dodgers' relievers
