The injury bug claimed another Mets offseason acquisition. Omar Narvaez will miss 8-9 weeks with a calf strain.
Narvaez is the 10th player placed on the IL by the Mets already, including reliever Jeff Brigham, who's on the IL for Triple-A Syracuse. This is a blow because Narvaez has settled in nicely, playing in five of seven games, performing well behind the dish and delivering four hits in his first 14 at-bats.
But for those who wanted to see the top prospects up sooner rather than later, there's a silver lining with the Narvaez injury. Francisco Alvarez will be recalled from the minors and get an extended look at the MLB level. The top catching prospect in all of baseball was 4-for-16 at Syracuse with two home runs and 4 RBI in the first week of the season.
If you're like me and want the prospects to get regular playing time in the minors to develop their skills rather than be on the major league squad as a back up, well there's good news for us, too. Alvarez will most assuredly play somewhat regularly, splitting the catching duties with Tomas Nido.
Healey went on to reiterate the call for Alvarez to catch regularly and be the DH when not catching, which not only is best for Alvarez's development, but maybe necessary if the Mets' hitting woes continue. Alvarez needs to play, and it looks like he will. The Mets need more consistent offense, and hopefully Alvarez brings it. Remember, he has hit 51 home runs the past two seasons in the minor leagues.
The unfortunate part is that the 21-year-old still has much on the job training to go through, and it looks like it'll be with the big club which is never ideal. But now that he's here, let's give it a go.
