Pete Alonso's dingers and Justin Verlander's bagels lead Mets to Subway Series romp

Mets 9 Yankees 3 (Yankee Stadium. The Bronx, NY)

Mets record: 47-53

Mets streak: Won 1

WP - Justin Verlander (5-5)

LP - Domingo German (5-7)

Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Pete Alonso hadn't had a home run in 45 at-bats before his third inning laser off of Domingo German. Then, his moon shot in the 6th put the game away as the Mets fire the first salvo in the latest Subway Series in The Bronx.

Need to Know

  • Justin Verlander threw six innings and gave up only two hits and four walks (three to D.J. LeMahieu.) He now has a 1.46 ERA in his last six starts.

  • His six shutout innings gives him 12 innings against the Yankees and only one run given up in those 12.

  • Alonso's last home run before tonight was on July 6th in Arizona.

  • Daniel Vogelbach hit his 7th homer of the season which immediately followed Alonso's second home run. It might not have come down yet.

  • Francisco Lindor had two hits on the night and scored twice: once on Alonso's first homer and once on an RBI single by Jeff McNeil to make it 7-0.

  • McNeil would add two more runs on an 8th inning double to make it 9-3. Alonso, Lindor, and McNeil drove in 8 of the 9 Mets runs.

  • Francisco Alvarez left the game in the 9th inning after he was hit by a pitch from Albert Abreu. (Abreu had hit Mark Vientos one batter prior.) Alvarez struck out on the play as his bat went through the zone.

Turning Point

The Mets were cruising with a 7-0 lead going to the bottom of the 7th. But Brooks Raley imploded in relief of Verlander. He lead off the inning by hitting Isiah Kiner-Falefa and then giving up a run scoring double to Anthony Volpe. Then he walked Kyle Higashioka before getting Jake Bauers to pop up.

Then Buck brought in Dominic Leone to face the meat of the order. He walked Gleyber Torres to load the bases, which meant Giancarlo Stanton was coming up with the bases loaded. Stanton hit a seed to right field, which gave me a heart attack. D.J. Stewart pursued the liner, which gave me another heart attack as he spun a few ways, but the ball landed in his glove. Then, Leone had to face the lefty Anthony Rizzo.

The high gas got Rizzo, and kept the game from getting too close for comfort.

Three Keys

Has the Polar Bear returned? From June 18th, when Alonso returned from being hit by a Charlie Morton pitch, through the recent White Sox series, he batted .137 in 111 plate appearances. But he had five hits in 12 PA's against the Red Sox, and his first two home runs tonight were key in a three hit/five RBI night.

Justin keeps it going: Outside of walking DJ LeMahieu three times, Verlander was once again excellent. His pitch count was elevated again (98 in six innings), but considering the histrionics that the bullpen brought to the game tonight, Verlander's six shutout innings were huge.

The day needed saving again: Buck followed up the escape job by Leone in the 7th by going with Grant Hartwig with a five run lead in the 8th. Hartwig got LeMahieu to start the inning, but then he gave up singles to Harrison Bader and Kiner-Falefa before walking Anthony Volpe to load the bases.

David Robertson would then take the bump with the bases loaded and one out. He gave up a run on a softly hit grounder to second, and then faced Jake Bauers in a spot where a single puts the Yankees within two. He would get Bauers to ground to first to end the inning and, once again, keep the game from getting way too close to a possible blown 7 run lead.
