Braves 6 Mets 0 (Citi Field, Flushing, NY)
Mets record: 52-65
Mets streak: Lost 3
WP - Spencer Strider (13-4)
LP - Jose Quintana (0-4)
Seat on the Korner: Spencer Strider
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
Tonights Seat on the Korner belongs to the red hot Spencer Strider. Strider, being one of the top candidates for the NL Cy Young, went 7 innings, only allowing 3 hits and no runs. He continues to lead the league in strikeouts by a wide margin, as he added another 6 to that number in tonight's start, making it a whopping 217 strikeouts on the season.
Need to Know
Jose Quintana gets the start for the second game of the doubleheader. Quintana has been great for the Mets, but has been getting no help from the Mets' offense, and tonight proved that once more. He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in his last 18 starts, dating back to before he was on the Mets.
Atlanta is now 8-1 against the Mets this season.
The Mets fielding has looking completely sloppy, having two errors on the day including an embarrassing play in the top of the 8th by both Danny Mendick and Tim Lacastro.
The Mets tied a season high tonight with 3 errors.
Mets are outscored 34-3 this series.
Turning Point
Tonight's turning point of the game came from the first run of the game, which came from a base hit by Kevin Pillar where Marcell Ozone scored. From there, the Mets were unable to get the bats going, with only 4 hits.
Three Keys
The Farm System: According to the MLB pipelines, the Mets have 5 top 100 prospects in the league - Luisangel Acuna (#40), Drew Gilbert (#57), Jett Williams (#84), Ronny Mauricio (#93), Kevin Parada (#96).
Tonight, Jeremiah Jackson, one of their other prospects who was acquired from the Dominic Leone trade, hit his 17th home run of the year in Double A Binghamton.
The front office did say that they were focusing on the future, and it is looking bright. The newly acquired prospects have proven to be clutch when needed and are certainly starting to perform to their expectations. The question is, what do the Mets do in the meantime?
Nimmo: Nimmo has continued to be one of the hardest working players on the team. He continuously gives all of his effort and tonight he proved that by going 2-2 with a walk. Nimmo got 2 out of the 3 Mets hits tonight.
Braves: The Braves offense this series has been stellar, much like it has been all season. Between both double header games, the Braves racked 29 hits against the Mets.
A huge part of this team this series has been Austin Riley and Matt Olson. Riley went 3-4 yesterday and Olson went 3-5 today. Ozzie Albies also took advantage of the Mets poor bullpen as he launched a home run in the top of the 9th tonight to give the Braves a 6-0 victory.
