Mets record: 50-58
Mets streak: Lost 3
WP - Brady Singer (7-8)
LP - Carlos Carrasco (3-6)
Seat on the Korner: Brady Singer
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
BRADY SINGER made his team-high 22nd start of the season and 85th of his career today vs. New York..it was his 1st career start vs. the Mets, leaving only the Royals, Marlins, Brewers and Phillies as the only teams he’s never faced . Brady went 8 innings giving up only 3 hits (2 to Pete Alonso and 1 to Mark Vientos) and no walks, he has now pitched at least 5.0 innings without issuing a walk in 15 of his 46 starts since last year, tied for the 4th most in the Majors during that time, trailing only Aaron Nola (16), Corey Kluber (15) and teammate Zack Greinke (15) . He kept the Mets scoreless for 8 innings , extending the Royals to 17 straight scoreless innings vs the Mets and he lowered his ERA from 5.46 to 5.10.
Need to Know
Brandon Nimmo missed his third straight game with quad tightness.
Birthday Boy Jonathan Araúz celebrated his 25th birthday today...The infielder went 1-3 in his Mets debut last night and went hitless in 3 at bats on his birthday and failed to step on second during a fielders choice that prolonged the bottom of the eighth inning...In 95 games at Triple-A Syracuse this year, Araúz batted .244/.344/.429 with 58 runs, 14 doubles, three triples, 14 home runs and 49 RBI.
The Mets are in a stretch of 14 of 18 games against American League opponents...They are now 4-7 in that span.
Carlos Carrasco made his 28th appearance and 23rd start against the Royals in his career...In his last start against Kansas City on September 9, 2020 while with Cleveland, he threw 7.0 innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits while fanning six batters...His last win against the Royals came on July 26, 2020. Carlos came into the game with a 6.40 ERA and after giving up 6 runs saw it tick up to 6.60.
Josh Walker actually threw a pitch in the game and the outcome was equally as bad as his non-pitch balk off outing of Monday night, giving up 3 runs in his third of an inning work and was pulled in favor of position player Danny Mendick.
As soon as the Royals scored their eighth run Buck took advantage of the rule allowing you to use a position player to pitch bringing in Danny Mendick who retired 2 of the 3 batters he faced getting Matt Duffy and MJ Melendez to fly out , Bobby Witt singled in between the 2 fly outs.
The Royals have won 6 straight games to begin this homestand vs. the Twins (3-0) and Mets (3-0), during which they’ve outscored opponents 39-21 (+18), including a pair of walk-off wins in extra innings and a shutout victories...it’s the longest active win streak in the Majors and is the Royals longest win streak in two years, since July 20-26, 2021, when they won 6 straight games at Milwaukee (2), vs. Detroit (3) and vs. the White Sox , the Royals completed their fifth perfect homestand in franchise history (min. 6 games), and it's the first since they went 6-0 vs. the White Sox and Rays from May 27-June 1, 2016.
Today's afternoon game was the Royals 47th day game of the season and they’re scheduled for 65 day games this year, which would mark the 2nd most in club history behind only last year, when they played 69 matinees...with today's win the Royals are 17-30 in day games, they have won 10 of their last 15 day games at Kauffman Stadium after beginning with 8 consecutive home day game losses.
Jonathan Heasley was one strike away from keeping the Mets off the board for 18 straight innings until Francisco Lindor hit his 22nd home run, a two run shot.
Turning Point
Bobby Witt JR's solo home run his 19th of the season gave the Royals a 3-0 lead which has seems to be an insurmountable lead these days.
Three Keys
DREW WATERS RUNS DEEP
Carlos Carrasco was on the way to a bounce back outing (not a high bar) as he pitched 3 innings keeping the Mets close, it unraveled in the 7th as he gave up back to back singles to Freddy Fermin and Matt Beaty prompting Jeremy Hefner to make a mound visit, on the very next pitch Drew Waters took Cookie deep to give the Royals a 6-0 lead.
OUT WITTED
Bobby Witt Jr, showed why he is one of the up and coming stars in baseball. Bobby was three for four on the day , two rbis, 2 runs scored. Bobby flashed his leather, stole a base and hit a home run in todays game.the stolen base was his 31st steal of the season, besting his career high 30th set last year as a rookie...he’s only the third player this century with 30 or more steals in each of his first two big league seasons, joining Ichiro Suzuki (2001-02) and Elvis Andrus (2009-10), and his 61 steals are the most by any player through his first two big league seasons since Billy Hamilton had 69 steals from 2013-14.
His 31 steals rank 4th in the Majors behind Ronald Acuña Jr. (51), Esteury Ruiz (43) & Corbin Carroll (33). Witt Jr. is the second player in Major League history to record at least 15 home runs and 30 stolen bases in each of his first two big league seasons, joining Barry Bonds, who did so from 1986-87.
BRADY RULES
Brady Singer picked up where Cole Ragans, Angel Zerpa and Taylor Clarke left off keeping the Mets off the board for another 8 innings.
