Mets 1 Marlins 0 (Loan Depot Park, Miami, FL)
Mets record: 50-47
Mets streak: Won 1
WP - Luis Severino (7-3)
LP - Roddery Munoz (1-5)
SV - Edwin Diaz (11)
Seat on the Korner:
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
Luis Severino worked around three walks, but only gave up two hits in six innings with seven strikeouts, and got every big out he needed to get in a 1-0 Mets victory.
Need to Know
This was the first 1-0 win for the Mets this season, and the second shutout win of the season.
The last 1-0 win the Mets had was against Miami, but it was in a suspended game where the Marlins scored two runs in the 8th, but then the game was suspended because of rain, and the runs came in a non-completed inning so they were wiped out.
The Mets had six hits on the day. The only Met with two? Jose Iglesias from the ninth hole.
J.D. Martinez's bloop hit in the 8th broke an 0-for-15 stretch.
After a two homer game on Friday, Jeff McNeil took an 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Jose Quintana was originally supposed to start this game, but came down with illness over the last 24-48 hours and was pushed back to the following week.
Turning Point
Let's go with the only run of the game, shall we?
Failing to score more runs could have been looked upon as a lost opportunity if the Marlins had done anything offensively. Leaving 10 runners on base wouldn't have helped either. But this was all the Mets needed.
Three Keys
He Ain't Sevy, He's Our Brother
After Sean Manaea got blasted last night, Sevy came up with a big time outing for the Mets. He had to deal with a little wildness and had some traffic on the bases in the later innings, but when he absolutely had to get outs, he got 'em.
Roddery Had A Guardian Angel
Roddery Munoz held his own in his five innings of work, giving up three hits and three walks while striking out five, and becoming somewhat of a Met killer.
Like Severino, Munoz got outs when he needed them too. But his outs were ones that were helped out by the BABIP gods.
Martinez also hit one hard to end the fifth that turned into an inning ending double play.
The Bullpen Script Is Set
The trials and tribulations of the Mets bullpen have been well documented. But today's combination just may be the combination that the Mets will ride to the end, for better or worse. Today, it was for better.
Jose Butto for the 7th ...
Dedniel Nunez for the 8th ...
And, of course, Sugar for the 9th.
And don't discount Diaz having a successful performance at Loan Depot Stadium for the first time in forever. No blown four run leads or catastrophic injuries. Consider that hurdle cleared.
Masterful pitching. And don't be fooled by the 1-0 score, Mets hitters scorched the ball a bunch of times, only to watch as the rocket shots were turned into outs. I bet they break out with a big number Sunday.
