Seat on the Korner: Tylor Megill
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Tonight’s honorary seat on The Korner goes to Tylor Megill, who secured his first win, as well as the Mets first win, of the 2025 season. The 6'7" righty retired the first nine batters he faced. Jose Altuve's leadoff single in the bottom of the 4th ended the season-opening streak. In all, Megill tossed 5+ innings of 1-run ball, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6.
With his win tonight, Big Drip, as he's affectionately known, extended his career April record to 8-2 and lowered his career April ERA to 2.79. Additionally, the Mets have now won in 7 straight Tylor Megill starts, dating back to August 30, 2024.
Need To Know:
The Mets scored 3 runs while scattering 5 hits.
Mets pitching allowed just 3 hits all game.
This was Brandon Nimmo's 810th career start, and just his 15th time penciled in as the Mets cleanup hitter.
Today was also opening day for the Mets AAA team, the Syracuse Mets. The S-Mets beat the Worcester Red Sox by a score of 4 to 3. Starting Pitcher, Blade Tidwell, had a statistically similar outing to Tylor Megill, with 5 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 1 walk, and 5 K's.
The Mets will try to take the series and get over .500 for the first time this season at 7:15pm ET on Saturday. Griffin Canning will take the mound, making his Mets debut. He will be opposed by Spencer Arrighetti.
Turning Point(s)
After a dropped third strike to Jake Meyers and a second Jose Altuve single, the Astros had the potential tying runs on with no outs to lead off the bottom of the 6th. Mets manager, Carlos Mendoza, summoned reliever Reed Garrett to get the Mets out of the jam. And that's just what he did.
Garrett struck out the first batter he faced, Isaac Paredes. He then walked Yordan Alvarez, putting the potential tying run in scoring position, and bringing power-hitting Christian Walker to the plate with the bases loaded. Garrett struck out Walker on four pitches and then retired Astros catcher, Yainer Diaz, on a fly out to right center. Sixth inning over. Rally stopped. Lead preserved. This was the last real threat by the Astros in the game.
Three Keys:
Soto Goes Solo
It didn't take long for Juan Soto to hit his first home run as a member of the Mets. It also didn't take long for the ball to leave the yard - 107.3 MPH off the bat on its way to the second deck facade in right field.
The Pen Is Mightier
While Tylor Megill certainly earned his spot on the Korner tonight, let's not forget the invaluable contribution by the Mets bullpen.
For the second straight night, the relievers did their part, this time not even allowing a hit in 4 innings pitched. Garrett, A.J. Minter (in his Mets debut), former Astros pitcher Ryne Stanek, and closer Edwin Diaz combined for 3 walks and 4 K's in their four frames. Diaz hit 98 MPH on his fast ball, and his 1 ball 2-strike slider to Yainer Diaz made him look foolish, en route to a 1-2-3 inning and the save.
Swaggy V Leads the Charge
After a disappointing Opening Day appearance, Mets third baseman, Mark Vientoss, got his first hit and first RBI of the season in style.
Brandon Nimmo led off the inning with a base hit to left. With Vientos at the plate, Nimmo attempted to steal second, and would have been thrown out if new Astros second baseman, Brendan Rogers, could have come up with the throw from catcher Yainer Diaz. Now with a runner in scoring position, Vientos pulled a 2-2 sinker to left, driving in the first run of the night with a double.
Vientos had no plans to stop there though, as the next batter, Jesse Winker drove him in with a single, increasing the lead to 2-0.
