Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Mark Vientos entered the game as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning for Brett Baty. He singled in the ninth and remained in the game. In the 11th inning, after Harrison Bader drove in DJ Stewart to tie the game at 2, with the count 1-2, Mark drove the ball to the deepest part of Citi Field for the 2-run walk-off game-winning home run. This marked his third hit in 4 at-bats since his recall.

Need to Know

  • Prior to the game the Mets made a roster move LHP Josh Walker was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse and LHP Danny Young has been selected from Triple-A Syracuse. He will wear number 81, he becomes only the second Met to wear that number Johneshwy Fargas wore it in 2021.

  • The Mets walk off win allowed them to avoid being swept for the second time this season. The Mets were swept in a three game series by the Brewers to open the season from March 29-31.The last time the Cardinals swept the Mets was in a three-game series from September 13-15, 2021 at Citi Field.

  • Since starting the season 0-5, the Mets have gone 14-8.

  • Francisco Lindor has four home runs, nine RBI,three doubles and nine runs over his last 12 games.

  • Pete Alonso despite walking three times and going hitless in 2 official at bats he is a .283 (30-106) hitter with 23 runs, six doubles, 10 home runs and 23 RBI in 29 career games against St. Louis.

  • Brandon Nimmo's streak of having safely reached base in nine straight games came to an end as Nimmo was 0-5 on the day.

  •  The Cardinals are now 26-28 all-time at Citi Field, St. Louis are now 12 -6 in the 18 games in Queens while outscoring the Mets 97-81.

  • Lance Lynn made his 200th career appearance in the National League. His three strikeouts in the game today leaves him five short of 1,000 strikeouts in the National League (A.L. 940, N.L. 995) and three strikeouts back of Steve Carlton (951) for 8th place in Cardinal History.

  • Nolan Arenado was held hitless in five at bats today and still needs 2 hits for 1,700 career; his 16 HR & 53 RBI vs. NYM are most vs. NL East club.

Turning Point

Carlos Mendoza demonstrated his unconventional managerial style, and despite appearing as a minor decision, it had significant implications in this game. Jose Quintana surpassed any other Mets pitcher's performance this season by going deep into the game. With the second out recorded in the 8th inning and Adam Ottavino warmed up in the bullpen, Mendoza initially headed out of the dugout to call for Ottavino. However, as he made his way to the mound, he observed Quintana's demeanor and engaged in a discussion. Quintana persuaded him to let him face Willson Contreras. Quintana then proceeded to strike out Contreras on his 99th pitch of the day, an impressive feat considering he threw 26 pitches in the first inning. It allowed Mendoza to save a pitcher which became a huge point in an extra inning game.

Three Keys

The Francisco Treat

Despite going 0-5 yesterday, Francisco Lindor delivered a crucial home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, leveling the score at 1-1. With this homer, he now boasts four home runs, nine RBIs, three doubles, and nine runs over his last 12 games. He also had a walk and a stolen base as well as 2 defensive gems in the field.

Reed(ing) Is Fundamental

Reed Garrett secured his fifth win of the year in his eighth appearance this season. Notably, Garrett is currently tied for the most wins among major league relievers, and his 27 strikeouts lead all relievers. Moreover, his 27 strikeouts mark the highest by a Mets reliever in his first eight outings of the season. In today's game, he pitched 2 innings, allowing just 1 hit and 1 unearned run, with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. This performance lowered his season ERA to 0.61.

Bader A Bing

With the Mets down to their final strike, trailing 2-1 with DJ Stewart at 3rd base, Harrison Bader drove a line drive single to center field, tying the game at 2 and setting the stage for Mark Vientos's walk off home run.
